Join the queue for Ah Yat abalone

Ah Yat Tian Xia offers a more casual setting and friendlier pricing.

IMAGINE my surprise when I turned up at Ah Yat Tian Xia in Orchard Central,
There was actually a line, possibly making it the only queue I've seen at this new mall.

Ah Yat Tian Xia is the latest chain from the Ah Yat Group. It offers a more casual
setting and friendlier pricing. The food was less refined, which was expected.
But the portions were generous and conducive to repeat visits.

What's most attractive is the value. For $29.80, you get a three-course
meal that includes sharks fin, abalone and bird's nest. It's crazy
value and individually, the dishes hold up on their own too.
The sharks fin comes braised in a claypot with a simple thick sauce.
It's not as runny as the wedding dinner variety, but it isn't as dense
as what you would expect from a top-class restaurant.

This version is somewhere in the middle, but pleasing enough. The baked
whole abalone with fried rice is the winner. The dish is not pretty. It is basically
a blanket of blah-looking brown sauce over an oval-shaped plate. But dig in
and you'll be sold. The fried rice peeks from under that brown blob and as
soon as you mix the sauce with the rice and take your first mouthful, You are
likely to make plans to return.

Ah Yat Tian Xia benefits from being a 'sister' to Ah Yat Abalone. The latter is
one of the best restaurants for abalone, with dishes that respect the shellfish's
unique texture and taste.

Here on its own, it's $16.80 - and you can order the next portion at half price.
If you're not that hungry or you're squeamish about shark's fin, this is a
good alternative. The bird's nest comes in the form of a dessert, mixed into
a bowl of almond paste.

I like the fragrant paste and texture of the dessert, but after the abalone rice,
finishing the dessert was a major undertaking. Overwhelmed

Not everything is perfect, of course.
Lively cannot begin to describe how it was when I was there at lunch.
The service staff seemed overwhelmed by the response and were obviously
struggling to handle the crowd.

I've included a number to call in case you want to contact the restaurant,
but I think it'll be futile trying to get them. The afternoon I was there,
the phone rang from the start of the meal till the end, and I never heard
it being answered.

It is hardly a place for a romantic date because the noise and the crowd will
give you a headache. Still, if you can tune out all the distractions, do join the queue.

SoShiok.com's comment:
The restaurant is packed with foodies trying out the value-for-money set meals.
Our gourmet spies tell us that the food's not great but good value for your buck.
